You hem me in behind and before, and You lay Your hand upon me. Psalm 139:5
When she realized that there was no fighting this, she tried to run. She thought that she could save herself. She just had to. ‘To be vulnerable is to be helpless,’ she thought. She couldn’t risk that. She had to escape.
Heart pounding, blood pumping, she could barely catch her breath. Suddenly, she realized that she had no idea what or who she was running from, much less where she was running to. She stopped in her tracks and looked around her, panic overwhelming her as she tried to make sense of her surroundings. “None of it makes sense,” she whispered through staggered breaths.
Then came a soft, gentle breeze, its sweet caress carrying with it a tender whisper. “Surrender, beloved.”
Her eyes began to moisten as the reality of her situation sank in. There was no escape. She was surrounded. No matter where she turned, He was there – the Lover she could never escape. He was before her. He was behind her. She was besieged by Him.
Shaking, she fell to her knees, tears now streaming down her cheeks. Her face buried in her palms, her heart said what her lips could not – “I am forever Yours.”
He knew the words before they were formed in her heart and uttered by her spirit. She was stopped, overtaken and arrested by His presence and when she felt His touch, she knew without doubt that she would never be the same again.
“Oh, Lord, here I am, raise my hands… I surrender.Oh, Lord, here I am, at Your throne… sweet abandon.”
