“The Philippines had one of the highest rates of journalist killings in the world even prior to this heinous episode of barbarism,” SEAPA executive director Roby Alampay said. “Even the scale of one day’s carnage cannot mask the years of government inaction, denial, and ineptitude that have allowed violence to go unpunished. That climate of impunity that has been allowed to fester is what has made all Filipinos — not just activists, politicians, or media men — vulnerable to powers and interests intolerant of dissent or even just independent voices.”

How many labels have we heard linked to the Philippines after news of the Maguindanao Massacre spread?

We were said to be the most violent country with regard to its tolerance toward journalists. We were told to have a culture of impurity. The Philippine government is under a lot of pressure to right the wrong that has been done.

Out in the open, for all to see, the evil that has been secretly invading the regions of the Philippines was exposed in a manner so dark and brutal the world could not ignore it.

Now, it is not a question of whether the labels given to the Philippines are true or not. It is a question of whether or not we will do what must be done to make them false.

All eyes are on us. What are we going to do?
